Stand Up and Be Counted!
How many people are homeless in Houston and Harris and Fort Bend Counties? How are veterans, families, children and vulnerable populations affected by homelessness? The Coalition for the Homeless works to help answer these questions by conducting an annual Homeless Count.
The annual Homeless Count is a requirement of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the local Continuum of Care (CoC) funding process which brought more than $24,000,000 to the Houston, Harris County, and Fort Bend County homeless assistance programs in the FY 2013 application process. The funding provides transitional housing, permanent supportive housing, and supportive services to our communities to assist homeless persons with greater self-determination.
On the night of January 22, 2015, volunteers will be placed at designated staging areas across Houston, Harris and Fort Bend County, and teams will be deployed by 5:30 PM. Teams will remain out until the assigned terriotory has been completed, or until 11:30 PM. There will be at least four people per team: one driver, one navigator, and two counters. Each staging area will have highly trained volunteer Captains and Co-Captains who will be available throughout the night for questions ands assistance throughout the count.
Please contact Gary Grier at the Coalition for the Homeless of Houston/Harris County to volunteer. Mr. Greer can be reached at 832-531-6006 or [email protected].
